How would be best to store my wedding photos? ?
I was married two years ago, and have recently purchased my proofs from the wedding photographer. Around 200 8x6 prints have been provided to me just in two cardboard boxes, and I can't help but feel that they will deteriorate quickly being stored in such a manner. I think that being stored in an album would be the best way forward, but is there anything I should avoid? I seem to remember reading somewhere that PVC sleeves are no good for photos. Finally, recommendations of any particulars brands of albums would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Fliss

- the most hassle free thing to do is to buy any album out there. sadly, i can't recommend you any good album as to i'm not that fond of albums. i'm here to suggest that you could scan your pictures then store it in a CD or wherever you want. in this manner, your pictures could be immortal. though, original pictures really are the greatest.
- Keep them in a good album but firstly I would scan them into your PC and save them to CD/DVD as a backup.
- Not sure about how to protect and preserve proofs, but if you haven't done so already, you may want to consider digitalising your pics. Put them on a cd or have a company or someone techie create a slide show on a dvd with music in the background and some effects (classy effects like gray scaling etc not wacky twists and turns etc). I am working on a project at the moment to get my old pics digitalised. Although its easy to put them onto cd I haven't yet found a free software that can enable me to create a perfect slide show on dvd. I may now go ahead and use trialware and if I reckon its good I'll buy it as its worth it to take steps like this to preserve memories. good luck.
- Acid free albums such as this Sorry, first link was an error http://www.archivalusa.com/pioneer-photo-albums.html
- album,cd
- well i would scan them all first off and keep a back up copy.. then any photo book will work just keep it from getting moist or in humid area's and nothing should happen to it! and if it does you have the back up on cd!
- First of all DO NOT assume that scanning your images and saving them to CD or DVD will guarantee preservation. CD's deteriorate and studies have shown that many will not last more than 4-5 years. Plus as media types change there is no guarantee that media READING capability will be available x years down the road. (Try to find somebody that can read a 5-1/2" floppy disk or even a 3-1/2" disk on a new computer). What good will a CD be in 2015 if everybody has just replaced their "Old-Disc" with "Next-New-Disc" readers and players? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_preservation The best thing to do with the pictures is to find some way to store them on an archival media AND then mount the pictures in an album using ARCHIVAL QUALITY pages and mounting supplies. Look for ACID FREE, LIGNIN FREE mounting pages and supplies. I will list a couple of links in the source section for albums and art supplies that have suitable materials. My recommendation would be to find a "proof album" with archival quality pages to store your images in and store them in an archival storage box to minimize deterioration. HTH, Good luck.
- Light Impressions has storage ideas and products for storing photographs archivally in paper form as well as digitally. http://www.lightimpressionsdirect.com There are archival CDs and DVDs available, and archival albums for them. Not all photograph albums are archival. Soon after my husband and I got married, he put our wedding photos into albums that we bought at a local store. Years later, there was discoloration along the edges of the pages. So I got archival albums and transferred/index.action the photos into them. The albums I got are actually archival portfolios from Itoya http://royaloak.utrechtblog.com/2008/05/ They're not fancy, but they at least protect the photos from deterioration.
