What experiences have over size 16 brides to be had trying on dresses?

I am a size16 bride to be and so far my experience of trying on dresses has not been what I had in mind. Yesterday I tried on a Pronovias dress (size 18) and that was too small!! Is it just me or are most wedding dress sizes are a little off?

  1. I was a size 16 when I went to try on dresses and found that I had to try on a size 22-24 to get them on - they do come up small but this may be because they are so fitted at bust and waist unlike general day to day clothes. The lady in Debenhams said this is a common problem for this reason. I got mine made in the end.
  2. yes i think they are my daughter got married last year and had to go two sizes up in some styles , but size does nt matter as long as you feel comfortable in the dress i hope youfind what your looking for and have a lovely day
  3. Well, they are pretty mean in making wedding dresses run small - I just don't think it's fair. Usually you need to go up a size or two, depending on the designer. I'm bigger than you, and the gown I chose was a size bigger than my regular dress size - and I still had to get alterations done to ease in some room under the arms.
  4. All wedding dresses seem smaller but you have to take into account all of the layers that make them up. I also was searching for my dream dress and was horrified when a size 22 was too small (i'm usually sz 18). I asked the woman in the shop and this is what she told me. Don't be disheartened by it though cos you can try on any dress size that has a corset back, they will just tie it for you to give you an idea. Hope this helps.
  5. I found this too!!! I was so nervous about going inot a bridal shop! I went to monsoon and BHS first to try a few things on by my self. Then i went to Berktex Brides and made an appointment. I was soooooooo embarrassed that size 16 didnt fit and size 18 was tight! But the dresser reassured me it was perfectly normal to go up at least one if not more sizes in a wedding dress! I have got to admit liking the person from the shop helped because i was more relaxed. At the end of the day i realised - i'm happy and getting married - as long as i love the dress and how it looks what does it matter what size i wear and who is going to know anyway!
  6. Wedding dresses are very small. One to two sizes smaller. I am a bigger girl not going to give my size. I goggled up "plus size dresses in the gta area" bc that where I am from and found stores that carrie bigger sizes. I also went online and looked at bonnie.com and found a wonderful site. In the unforgetable line they have great modren dresses. I went to the store locater and found a store near me. I got a dress that laces up in the back therefor got a smaller one. I could loose weight gain it does not matter. I can belive how slim I look bc it laces up. You can see you curves and if you have large breast even better. Please check it up or do the goggle search. I am super happy from being super stresses, the people at my store in toronto were awsome. Windsor Bridal the ladys name in Martha. I promise go out there try them on and you'll be happy. I am bigger then you and I found a great dress. Just go to the right stores.
  7. that is because if you wear a 16w it is really like wearing a 22 -24 in those dress sizes because they don't go to the w sizes. you have traditional sizes that go to 18 and then start 12w, 14w, 16w. (or 20, 22, 24) They could just run small too which would make the size difference greater. Who cares what size the dress is. Don't worry about the number in the tag - just make sure your measurements correspond to the manufacturer's size chart. Oh and I went to David's bridal because I could try dresses on in my size. It made a big difference and I ended up getting my dress there. Even if you don't want to get your dress from them you could use them to see what styles/cut of dress will look best and then go from there at a regular bridal shop.
  8. Well if you have a problem I can rent you my marquee out. Just take it with a smile and get on with it.
  9. Hey, get this, so its an important day and you wanna look fab, so they make wedding dresses so you have to go up a size,.. or 2. I went to a bridal shop that just cater for plus size wedding dresses, They go up to huge sizes but you can also find dresses in your size.
  10. when i got married i was a size 28 and had quite a lot of dresses to chose from.i chose something plain which looked fantastic on me.
