The matches were made based on family recommendations, and pictures of the prospective brides and grooms. The women came to Hawaii via ship, and once in Hawaii, were contractually obligated to the men. Problems arose because some women were forced to become prostitutes; other problems included finding that the men in question were far older than their pictures would indicate, since photography was expensive, and often the men sent very outdated photographs for the matching process. By the time the brides discovered the deceit, whether deliberate or intentional, it was too late to back out of the contracts.
