Why do Christians prefer big weddings over small ones or eloping?
Is family really that important to most people? A lot of women say elopement is a sign of shame, regret, and later divorce. Why are women and Christians so obsessed with big family weddings? Bob, it does seem like Christians obsess over big weddings than other groups.

- They have to make themselves look better and more important than all their friends. It's a Christian tradition.
- You do realize that the biggest group people in this country that get divorced are christians. As for the statement of elopement being a sign of shame, regret and divorce needs some serious backing up from you.
- This is another of those questions that cause me to pause and say "Why is this addressed to Christians?" Weddings are a social affair. They involve two complete families (and sometimes more, when there are extended or blended families), plus friends, coworkers, and others. Why wouldn't you want to allow them all to come? Jews have big weddings. Christians have big weddings. Atheists have big weddings. Muslims have big weddings. PEOPLE have big weddings. Why address this only to Christians? ===== Friend, you're simply stereotyping here, then insisting that your stereotype is right. I can't tell you how many lavish Jewish weddings I've been to. I've also been to a very small one. I've been to one lavish Catholic wedding, and several small ones. I've never been to a lavish Protestant wedding, mostly because I don't know many rich Protestants. Get rid of the stereotypes.
- Compared with people in/from India, Christians wedding is humble generally.
- I'm a Catholic Christian and I had a small wedding. I don't think that the size of the wedding is what is important. It is the vows themselves that you are making before God, to each other, that matter.
- We really enjoyed a super small wedding.I don't know why some people, especially celebrities, go way overboard.I guess some people feel they need that sort of thing.
- Not all do. But when a person receives a sacrament of vocation (i.e., matrimony or holy orders) it is good for many people to attend, to witness the event and to pray for those receiving the sacrament.
