What are some of the traditions of why some cultures break things at weddings ?

A groom steps on a bulb before the guests say mozul tov Sometimes in greek wedding they break dishes on the floor. what are the cultural meaning of why people do this at weddings ? I'm just curious and I will pick the best answer . Thank you ; )

  2. In a Jewish ceremony its a glass not a bulb, it represents sadness at the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, to think upon it even in times of happiness. Some say the greeks destroyed the plates to honor the dead that were not present. But I suspect, the breaking of things, maybe for the noise factor, I am Irish in descent, pagans and such used noise, eg noise makers on new years, knocking on wood, clapping etc, to scared away evil spirits, I have no idea why that hate noise, but apparently the evil have sensitive hearing.
